Earlier this year we went to the Jerwood Painting Fellowships Exhibition at Jerwood Space in Union Street, Borough – a brilliant exhibition by up-and-coming artists. From 14th September – 23rd October the gallery features entries from another competition – Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016.
Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK and is a project led by founding Director, Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of Bath School of Art & Design at Bath Spa University. The Prize was founded in 1994 and has been supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation since 2001.
Selected from original drawings, the Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence, and provides a platform to showcase the work of drawing practitioners, from student to established and this year includes hand drawn, digital, moving image and sculptural works.
61 works by 55 artists have been selected from 2,537 submissions from across the UK by artist Glenn Brown; Curator and Director, Kupferstich-Kabinett at Staatliche Kunstammlungen Dresden, Stephanie Buck; and Director, Modern Art Oxford, Paul Hobson. The four prize winners will be announced at the preview evening on 13th September and will receive cash awards of £8,000, £5,000 and two of £2,000.
We’ve been able to view many of the entries, and the standard is high, as you can see from our small selection here – we look forward to seeing the exhibits in the gallery at the preview.
