Zoe Savitz Photography at Carnegie Library Herne Hill

Since I started contributing to South London Blog, my admiration for photographers has gone up 100%. Having to take photos for various articles soon made me aware just how difficult it is to take half decent photos, never mind artistic ones! So when we were invited to the opening night of a photographic exhibition at the Carnegie Library in Herne Hill I was first in the queue, not least to see if I could pick up some tips.

Photographer Zoe Savitz is a South Londoner who has travelled widely and this, her debut exhibition, Life Through My Lens, shows some of the pictures she has taken in various parts of the world, as well as some from nearer home. The exhibition features images from places as widespread as Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Jerusalem and Croatia; one wall shows scenes of children from Sri Lankan orphanages where Zoe worked as a volunteer for a time. 20% of the profits from the show will go towards the project, which you can read more about here.

The fairground ride is one of my favourites from the show – it reminds me why I never go on them! The other two images here reveal her interest in street guitar players. I enjoyed the exhibition; it’s obvious that Zoe is a talented photographer who has an eye for composition and we wish her every success.

I’d like to take this opportunity to mention the Carnegie Library; some of you may know that it’s under threat of closure in its present form, along with several other libraries in Lambeth Borough. Having lived nearby, I know what an important and well-used community asset it is – here are just some of the activities that take place there: adult literacy club, English conversation club, chess club, yoga and pilates, chatterbooks (children’s book club), business advice sessions, and my favourite, tea cake and gardening. Emerging creative talent, like Zoe Savitz, would also no longer have this wonderful exhibition space. Last week,  Southwark Council opened a new library in Camberwell; we sincerely hope that Lambeth Council will reconsider its current policy of closures.
