What – New pub in Forest Hill, formerly the Hob.
Where – Conveniently located opposite Forest Hill Station on Devonshire Road
Any Good? – Great actually. Although I’d never been in its previous incarnation, I have heard it was in need of a bit of a revamp. Hippo Inns, the company behind the pub, have more than delivered here. A cosy interior complete with sofas and open fire greet punters, and create a lovely atmosphere. Plus there’s live acoustic music throughout the week.
There’s a focus on craft beers with both the Brick Brewery and Brixton Brewery being represented on the taps. Upstairs there’s more room for dining along with a cocktail bar with a small well thought out list of cocktails.
The food at the signal is another tick for me. Their signature rotisserie chicken, having had every care taken to ensure it’s nice and moist when it arrives on your plate, is spit roasted over charcoals and delivers on both flavour and moistness. The burger, made from 35 day dry aged beef, was very satisfying too. Another highlight was the cockles in white wine starter, served with sourdough which was perfect for soaking up all the delicious sauce.
Finally, those who were familiar with the Hob may be wondering what’s happening to the popular comedy they used to host. Having spoken to those in charge, I believe this is something that should be returning shortly, so watch this space.
