At South London Blog we like to support independent shops and businesses and we’ve written before about how they are one of the key factors that make an area popular. Here our guest blogger Sam writes about one of his favourite independents, the Riverside Bookshop, near London Bridge.
“The London Bridge area has some notable places to visit, not least Borough Market, but there are also some little gems that commuters march past without noticing. Opposite the new entrance to London Bridge station now under construction in Tooley Street SE1 is one such gem, The Riverside Bookshop. It is now on two floors at 57 Tooley Street on the corner of Battle Bridge Lane, which runs along the east side of Hay’s Galleria.
The Riverside Bookshop is a small independent bookshop that is definitely worth a repeated browse. It is an easy place for commuters to miss as they rush along Tooley Street into More London. Small though it is, the bookshop is an oasis in the bustle of Tooley Street.
Its smallness is a virtue as it allows customers to pop in even for a few minutes and look around to pick up the latest book, or buy a card without the overwhelming array of books in larger shops. The newest titles are clearly displayed for a quick look with a selection of children’s books, and local and international travel guides and signed copies.
And if you can’t find the book you want, the bookshop has a very prompt ordering service, usually within 24-48 hours as well as a ‘Little Red Card’ for loyalty stamps: one for every £10 spent and six stamps for a £5 reduction. The staff are very friendly, so even if it’s only for a few moments, pop in and have a browse and don’t forget to have a look upstairs.”
