The Dogstar in Brixton, which is a favourite late night venue of mine, also plays hosts to regular Laughing Horse Comedy nights. Currently hosting heats of the New Act of the Year competition you can go and look out for the next big names in comedy. A bargain at just £5 the Laughing Horse Brixton could bring a smile to your mid-week self.
When I visited they were still in the early heats, and the giggle factor did vary. One act in particular was especially cringe-worthy as he descended into a welsh sheep loving type joke which he seemed to dig himself deeper and deeper into, oh dear! Luckily for the audience, acts only had 5 minutes each and were flashed off stage by what looked like a red bicycle light! One bad act aside the rest of the evening provided plenty of laughs and a huge variety of styles as there were at least 10 different comedians.
Quarter finals of the competition are getting started now, with the semi-finals starting in April. So go with an open mind and you could just spot the next comedy genius, in your local South London boozer!
