Morley College – Summer Short Courses

Fun Adult Learning in Lambeth

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.”
Henry Ford

So if the key to eternal youth is continued education, now’s the time to get yourself down to Morley College, which was founded in the 1800’s,  and continues to offer a wide range of adult educational courses.  Based in Lambeth North, a stones throw from the Imperial War Museum (another place to enhance your youthfulness), the college offers interesting and diverse classes in subjects ranging from music, to mime, fashion and photography.

In view of their upcoming summer shorts courses which run from 13-18th July, I went along to one of the hour long free taster sessions which aimed to allow people to ‘try before you buy’.

Having been in Rio for Carnival earlier this year I was drawn towards the Samba Percussion lesson, this is despite having no other musical experience, unless you count being able to play ‘three blind mice’ on the recorder.  The moral of the story is, don’t be afraid to sign up to something way out of your comfort zone, as I found out it can be great fun!Samba Percussion at Morley College

The 60 minute session really did only brush the surface of what I imagine you’ll be able to learn in the longer session which takes place on 16th July.  We got the chance to learn about the instruments used and played some simple rhythms and breaks – Notting Hill Carnival here we come.  Who said learning had to be dull, this session was upbeat, loud and proud with our teachers enthusiasm for the genre infectious.  The age old adage “time flies when you’re having fun” couldn’t have been more appropriate here.

If you’re interested in trying something new, meeting people and perhaps even discovering a hidden talent then I’d recommend trying one of the short courses at Morley College as a good place to start.  You can try something new from as a little as £5 for an hour session, increasing in price depending on the length and subject. This means you don’t have to worry about forking out a lot for something you’re not sure you’ll like, and gives you the option to try several classes if your considering signing up for one of their longer offerings. Courses available include tap dancing, aromatherapy, wine tasting, and languages as well as a variety of different music and drama classes.
