Day 14 – #20Days20Dinners
The Shard, the tallest building in the EU with a whopping 87 storeys. Open to the public since early 2013, with visitors paying £25 for the privilege of enjoying the view. You could however do as I did, visit one of the three bars inside which for the price of a drink gets you entry to this famous building. OK so it’s only the 31st floor, but hey the view was impressive enough for me.
I visited Aqua Shard for day 14 of the challenge, it was drinks only as A. I’m not made of money and B. I didn’t have the foresight to book in advance. Unsurprisingly the restaurants in the Shard are super popular, so if you do want to go for dinner you might want to plan in advance.
Arriving at the main entrance we hopped in a lift and zoomed up to the 31st floor, there’s someone on the door controlling numbers, but on the day of my visit, a Thursday, we went straight in. Finding a table was not so easy but fortunately we managed to grab one right by the window as we spotted a group leaving. It’s table service, however this was slow, although when you’ve got a view as stunning as this it’s a pleasure not to be rushed. We started rather extravagantly with two glasses of champagne, which was fantastic. At just shy of £30 (they add service) the price was less so, however you have to remember where you are, and think about the price of that viewing platform! More economical were the two glasses of house white we followed this up with which came in at under a tenner with service and were very drinkable.
I’m hoping to re-visit the Shard and get dinner next time, I’m aiming for Hutong who serve Dim Sum, but you can also eat at either Aqua (British) or Oblix for steak.
