Day 1 – #20Days20Dinners

Friday and the 20 day dinner challenge has begun!  The first evening is approached with the fresh enthusiasm that I already feel might be lagging somewhat as the days proceed.  For the first evening it’s a dinner with the girls and we gather on mass to say farewell to yet another friend who’s moving to Sydney.  My promotion of London obviously needs to step up a gear, although how I can compete with omnipresent sunshine and plentiful beaches I’m not quite sure!

The venue for the evening is the lovely Ben’s Canteen on St Johns Hill.  I’ve followed these guys on twitter for a while and the frequent posting of mouth wateringly good food has finally got the better of me.  What’s more they have a weekly deal where you can enjoy two courses plus a drink for the very reasonable price of £15, just make sure you book a table before the cut off at 7pm.  Deals like this are to be taken advantage off, especially in January, and especially when this is only one of twenty!

The Food-

A simple menu with a choice of small plates which can be shared for a tapas style meal or ordered as individual starters, there are then a few choices of bigger plates with the star of the show going to the variety of burgers.  To start it had to be squid for me and this came as a salad with chorizo and chickpeas.  I wasn’t alone in being pleased with my choice as nodding approval came from around the table, the scotch egg and lamb flat bread were two of the other stand-out plates.

In most cases burgers were the go to choice for mains, and it’s good to see some innovation here.  I had the soft shell crab burger which came complete with Asian slaw and peanut mayo, a great combo and one I would definitely have again.

Even if you don’t make the £15 deal food is well priced with burgers in the region of £9, you don’t get sides for that but I found after having a starter it wasn’t needed.  A touch appreciated by me was the presentation of food on the blue edged white enable plates which I’m loving at the moment, you know the ones!

The Verdict-

With a group all arriving at different times and taking a while to order due to the usual girly chatter, the staff were nothing but accommodating.  Food was great value, well presented and very tasty.  I would definitely return and recommend you to visit this quirky canteen a stones throw from Clapham Junction.

First dinner…Done!
