I really like going out for breakfast and I’m always on the lookout for new places to go, so when someone recommended Aqua Shard I just had to go – not least because I hadn’t actually got round to seeing the view from South London’s most iconic building. So I arranged to meet a friend and booked a table (through OpenTable – nearly got another freebie coming!). We went on a Friday and it was virtually full, so booking is recommended.
We met at the entrance on St Thomas Street, where the dedicated lift whisks you up to the 32nd floor in no time. Floor-to-ceiling glass gives you the most amazing view, which we could enjoy from our window table. The breakfast tables look out over St.Pauls and upriver to Waterloo and Westminster so it was fun picking out the streets and buildings we know so well.
So what about the brekkie? My friend had the Full English while I had the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on sourdough bread. Both were absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked the way we requested and in filling portions of quality ingredients. In particular, the marvellous smoked salmon comes in dry, medium or oily while the black pudding will satisfy any connoisseur of that delicacy. The coffee was good too, while service was prompt and efficient. There was the usual variety of breakfast favourites on the menu, but if you go at the weekend there are set menus only, so please check the website.
Aqua Shard is a great place to go for many reasons, but obviously the view is its USP. Expect to pay around £25 per head for breakfast, but when you consider it costs that amount to go to the viewing platform alone, it’s worth it!
