I went to Roast to meet a friend for breakfast. The restaurant is located within the market itself on the first floor (accessed by stairs or lift) so you can look down onto the market in action as you eat if you have a window table, of which there are plenty.
It’s quite upmarket with prices to match, but if you want to treat yourself or maybe impress a business client, Roast is an excellent choice. I went for the ‘Full Borough’ which is basically what it says – everything – so you need to be hungry for this one! I’m a massive fan of black pudding and this breakfast includes Ramsay of Carluke’s Scottish black pudding – heavenly! My friend went for the Eggs Royale with Loch Etive smoked trout, instead of the usual smoked salmon. We both really enjoyed our breakfasts which were perfectly cooked and very tasty.
We both had cappucinos, which are small (real Italian style) but perfect and my friend also had a ‘Breakfast Booster’ – a juice bar creation bizarrely called a ‘Homemade Sexy Green’ (see menu). It claims all sorts of positive outcomes but I haven’t checked with him yet if these were fulfilled!
The bill for the two of us came to around £50 including service, which was impeccable (the service, not the bill!). Roast also serves lunch and dinner and we’ll get round to reviewing this in the future. Best days to go are Wednesday to Saturday when the full market is open so you can have a wander round afterwards. Recommended.
