Ben’s Canteen – The Anti-Valentine’s Menu

Last week we were kindly invited to sample the ‘Valentine’s’ menu at Ben’s Canteen so we asked our new guest blogger, Nancy Williams, to give it a try – here’s what she found:

“Ben’s Canteen is a great little neighbourhood restaurant just down the road from Clapham Junction Station and they’re offering a Valentine’s menu with a twist, celebrating singlehood in all its glory and going with an Anti-Valentine’s approach. In keeping with this spirit, if you bring along an item of clothing belonging to your ex you will be given a free (and delicious) bitter berry martini, while the clothes will go to charity- a win all round!

The canteen has a special Anti-Valentine’s ox- heart and chorizo chilli burger, which is loaded with gorgonzola cheese, coriander, sour cream and salad. Although I don’t eat meat, it looked mouth wateringly delicious and I was assured by the other guests that I was definitely missing out- the gorgonzola- chilli combination was incredible!

The selection of sides is also fantastic. The sweet potato fries were up there with the best I’ve ever had, while the Mexican fries were pure indulgence, loaded with cheese sauce, sour cream and guacamole. There are also some great lighter options such as lemon zesty kale and Asian style aubergine.

We finished with a couple of desserts to share. Warm mini donuts came with syringes of chocolate sauce, strawberry jam and custard which you then injected into the dough. This was a really nice fun touch. However, the real winner was the warm chocolate brownie with peanut butter ice-cream. The brownie had a perfect gooey centre and the ice-cream was so nutty and delicious and wasn’t too sweet alongside the rich brownie. This was definitely the best dessert I’ve had in a long time!

The Anti-Valentines day menu is £35 a head for any burger with fries or salad, “bottomless bubbles” and dessert to share. This would be a great place to enjoy a night out with friends and escape the Valentine clichés.”
