Last weekend we went along to The Hand in Hand in Brixton Hill. The pub has been newly refurbished transforming it from a classic boozer into a much more modern gastro pub. Along with the refurbishment they have also employed a new head chef who has created a new menu.
The pub still has a welcoming vibe when you walk in and has a mix of a modern and classic interior. The new menu was small but had all the pub classics on there; I’m always of the opinion that it’s better to do a few things really well than try too much and fail. It’s safe to say in this case they do a few things amazingly.
We started out on the chicken wings, which were seriously tasty and great value for money. I then had the fish & chips while my friend John had the cheeseburger. The fish was nice and the chips were delicious and after seeing John’s burger I had to try some of that too – it was as good as it looked! Overall the food is excellent value for money, and there is a wide selection of ales, wines and beers to please all tastes.
The Hand in Hand also has live music on the weekends with an open mic every Thursday night and shows all the sport, unlike many gastro pubs. The pub is also running a scheme over Xmas with the Brixton Soup Kitchen, where they’ll be offering a mulled wine or Snowball to anyone who brings down some winter clothing for the charity. You will be able to do this between 17th and 23rd of December.
All in all the Hand in Hand is an excellent local pub well worth a visit.
