Vegetarians, look away now, Macellaio RC on Northcote Road is strictly for carnivores with the site combining restaurant and butcher. The impressive meat counter greets you upon entry, with the sound of beef being chopped into portions a soundtrack to your evening meal. Recently opened in Battersea with existing outposts in South Kensington, Union Street and Exmouth Market, the latest offering from founder Robert Costa also has a strong focus on the fine Italian wines on offer.
On our visit we were impressed with both the food and the theatre of the evening. Cutlery wasn’t simply placed on the table, rather a knife was speared impressively in an upright position into the wooden table. 600g of T-Bone was impressively revealed from under a butlers domed lid. Whilst the rump steak was beautifully tender and was accompanied with shaved parmesan and rocket.
We’d started with Bollito Croquettes, which were the only disappointment of the evening, too dry for our taste. But the Battuta with gorgonzola was a triumph.
If you have room the deserts on offer on our visit were well worth making space for – Tirimisu with wonderfully light mascarpone.
A small-ish space, the atmopshere was buzzing with couples and groups alike and on a warm Thursday there were tables sat outside well into the evening. Lovers of steak – add this to your list.
