Mendoza Square, Clapham North

New Latin American Restaurant in Clapham

I was excited to spot Mendoza Square in Clapham North which opened recently, as it immediately brought back memories of my recent trip to South America, which included several days in Mendoza.  However the name might be slightly deceiving as instead of focusing on Argentinean cuisine, the home of Mendoza, it instead features a fusion of Latin American cuisine across it’s menu.  Don’t worry, I’m not holding this against them, a variety can be good, and they serve Quilmes!

Both the interior and outside dining area have been well designed and are bright and colourful without being tacky (which is often the downfall of Mexican restaurants), whilst including nods to the continent they take their inspiration from. I particularly liked the vintage travel style posters adorning the walls.1 (640x427) 2 (640x427)6 (527x640)

As previously mentioned Quilmes is on the menu as well as other Latin American beers such as Corona and Modelo, these are all bottles and you can enjoy a three for £10 deal.  The wine list is small but serves good South American varieties, as you may well expect from a restaurant that takes its name from Argentina’s most famous wine region.  There’s also a small range of cocktails which go for £7.50 each or 4 for £20 which is very good value.  I was pleased to see the inclusion of the Pisco Sour, a highly underrated drink in my eyes.

The food was good but not outstanding.  The calamari starter was a definite highlight, good batter and accompanying dip. However the ribs we ordered could have been more succulent. Calamari at Mendoza Square Clapham North IMG_20150708_124052

For mains it had to be steak and with options starting at £13.50 with sides I think it’s pretty good value.  I fear Argentina may have ruined me in my judgement of steak forever though, let’s face it you’ll never get here what we got there for the same price!  The steak here was cooked medium rare as we ordered, mine the Chorizo 8oz was tender and therefore easy to cut, how I like it.  Again, as with the ribs I did find the steak was slightly dry, lacking the juiciness you may hope for.  The peppercorn sauce, grilled mushroom and sweet potato fries were all good, especially the sweet potato fries which I’d definitely order again.Steak Mendoza Square Clapham

The desert menu was a little disappointing; I think the Latin American theme could have continued here a little more. Where were the Churros and Dulce de Leche? Although I’m sure they’ll hook many in with the classic chocolate brownie and cheesecake on offer.

Overall I think Mendoza square is a nice neighborhood restaurant and a good addition to the north end of the high street in Clapham. It looks good, has a great outdoor space which gets sun in the evening and is serving up some good value food.  I’d recommend visiting for one of the midweek offers they run such as half price Tacos on a Tuesday and free beer with a burger on Wednesdays.
