Continuing my exploration of Crystal Palace as part of the blog’s spotlight month on the area, a Friday night took me to Thai Crystal. I’d first wanted to try Thai having seen the huge space that Tamnag Thai occupies on Westow Hill, clearly Thai must be popular in Crystal Palace I thought. Having done some further research though I found that the restaurant of choice for locals was not Tamnag but actually Thai Crystal, which is a smaller venue on the same road.
Luckily I had the foresight to book ahead as it was busy on our visit. Staff are friendly and wearing traditional dress and the restaurant itself is as you would imagine a standard local Thai, not fancy or modern but pleasant nonetheless.
Food wise we decided between two to share four starters and then share a main. There’s so many good options for starters, we thought why narrow it done. I guess we went a bit Tapas with our Thai. The prawn and pork dim sum were the highlight of our first course, but prawn tempura, duck spring rolls and chicken satay were also tasty, not the best I’ve eaten but neither was I expecting them to be.
Our main course was an absolute favourite of mine, masaman curry, and we went for it with lamb as advised by our waiter. The flavour of the curry was great, although the lamb was thin slices rather than chunks which I would have preferred.
At £25 a head for more than enough food and a bottle of wine I think Thai Crystal is reasonably priced, a friendly local, and one for those nearby to at least add to their take-away list.
