We were invited to afternoon tea at the InterContinental Hotel, next to the O2 Arena in Greenwich. The hotel is relatively new and adds a new dimension to the area. It’s a very impressive building and the interior is of an extremely high quality. The hotel has taken influence from the area and has implemented a maritime feel throughout the hotel which adds a nice touch. It has three restaurants and two bars all with their own unique ambience. Our afternoon tea was in the Meridian Lounge on the ground floor.
The InterContinental has a partnership with the East India Company as the hotel’s tea provider – the reasoning behind this came from the proximity of the East India Docks. The afternoon began with a tea tasting session led by Lalith, a tea expert from Sri Lanka who has spent most of his life in the tea industry. He led us through five different teas, ranging from Oolong tea to classic Afternoon tea. My personal favourite was the Milk Oolong, which had a unique caramel infused aroma.
We were then able to select our favourite tea from the five we had tasted, to accompany our sandwiches and cakes. There was a nice mix of sandwiches to start with and they complemented the tea very well – I particularly liked the egg mayonnaise in the brioche bun. We were then treated to a selection of mini desserts ranging from classic scones to Earl Grey infused mousses. The food and tea were great and as a finale we got to try a champagne and tea cocktail – a very nice end to the afternoon! Afternoon tea costs £30, which considering the quality of the setting, tea and food, is competitively priced with other similar venues.
Many thanks to our hosts for a great afternoon.
