Lobos Meat & Tapas – Borough High St

Here at SLB we love tapas and Spanish food generally and we’re lucky to have some great tapas restaurants in south London. We believe we’ve discovered another one here which you’re just going to love.  Lobos is located under the railway bridge near London Bridge Station, backing on to Borough Market – it’s on two levels with small tables and stools crammed in around the bar and kitchen. It’s noisy, bustling and very atmospheric as a result, reminding me of many tapas bars in Spain I’ve been to.

The four of us kicked off with some Martini olives and Marcona almonds accompanied by some lovely pink cava – perfect to get us in the mood for food and (more) drink, and the conversation flowed. We followed with three plates: prawns, squid and mussels with garlic and chilli, chorizo and morcilla (black pudding) fried with piquillo pepper and quail eggs, and a typical Spanish potato omelette. Everything looked so appetising – and it tasted just as good, the seafood dish being particularly popular, as was the black pudding. The wine flowed too (a typical Spanish red, Ribera del Duero – my favourite).

Lobos markets itself as ‘Meat and Tapas’ so we moved on to the meat – an Iberico pork selection of three cuts: fillet, presa (shoulder) and secreto (another cut from the shoulder) along with a herb crusted rack of lamb. It is a meat lovers paradise – succulent and flavoursome cuts, pink and irresistible. There’s plenty more on the menu we’re going back to try too, such as chuleton – sirloin on the bone, and braised pork cheeks.

We had enough room left to share a couple of desserts, the double chocolate and pistachio cake and the dulce de leche cheesecake – both delicious. Our bill came to £40 per head including drinks and service, which, considering how much food and drink we had and the high quality, is very good value.

Lobos has a warm and welcoming ambience with friendly, knowledgeable staff. The menu is small but perfectly formed, and if you like Spanish food, meat in particular, this place is an absolute winner.
