The founders of Flying Fantastic got the idea for their Aerial based fitness school after experiencing its popularity in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where there are around 55 such schools in the city centre alone. Bringing this fun and unique way to exercise to London since 2011, Flying Fantastic offer classes in Aerial Silks, Slings, Hoops and Trapeze.
I went along to their Battersea out post at The Wilditch Centre on Culvert Road to try my hand at the Aerial Silks.
The 90 minute classes start with group conditioning to warm you up before moving to the silks which each have a safety mat below them. The class is arranged with beginners moving up to advanced in a semi circle of silks around the hall. With three others in the beginners category with me we had one teacher for the four of us, a great ratio which meant we got plenty of attention and could ask for as much help as needed (lots).
There’s no denying it, Aerial is hard, you’ll use muscles you never knew you had. My first attempt on the silks left me feeling the next hour was going to be a complete failure but as the class progressed I found some of the shapes more achievable and was pleased with my progress.
It was impressive to see the moves which the higher levels in the session were able to achieve, and this is definitely encouragement and inspiration to continue.
I did ache for days after but I’m glad I gave it a go. It’s way more exciting than your average gym session, which may mean you actually stick with it! I think the aerial classes will be particularly appealing for those who have done gymnastics before.
