Started in 1993, Swimming Nature aim to bring a different way of teaching to children and adults alike. Based around the premise that water is your friend they instil water confidence in all of their pupils. British swimmer Mark Foster is their ambassador who’s designed his own adult teaching programme for the company, designed to take adult swimmers to the next level.
I’d consider myself a competent swimmer and was part of a team when I was younger, but it’s been years since I’ve had a lesson and aside from the odd dip whilst on holiday it’s probably been a year since I’ve actually been in a pool. I had to sheepishly admit this to my coach as I went along to try out a one to one adult lesson, held as many of the swimming nature classes are, at a fitness first. My lesson took place in the Streatham Hill branch.
I asked to focus on front crawl and breast stroke, as these are the two I would use the most, but the teachers can take you through any of the four. With a few lengths for warm up and for the instructor to gauge my level, the lesson began. One of the unique qualities of this swim school is that the teachers get in the water with you, this allows them both to demonstrate and to manipulate your own arms and legs so you can feel how the movement should be.
I enjoyed my lesson and came away with a lot to think about. I realised that over the years I’d got into bad habits, so it was strange trying to adapt to a new technique but I hope it will push me to swim more often. In using what I’ve learnt I hope to have more structure to my swims and see some improvement over time. For adults looking to take their swimming to the next level, or perhaps those entering a triathlon, these one on one lessons could be the perfect solution.
