In a week when it was reported that nearly half of the UK’s night clubs have closed down in the last 10 years*, there was some good news for Brixton clubbers as new club Phonox revealed its vision and opening line ups.
Taking over the space that was plan B on Brixton Road, serial London night club operators The Columbo Group are transforming the venue into a new clubbing concept called Phonox opening on 4th September…. and it promises to be well worth a look.
Phonox is looking to get back to clubbing’s raw ideals of people meeting and sharing an experience on the dance floor week after week, something which has sometimes been lost in the modern day clubbing scene. They hope to grow a community of like-minded clubbers in South London by creating a vibe and a line-up to encourage regulars to make the place their weekend home. With tickets starting at just £5, this sounds like a place looking to put the clubbers first.
The line-up will focus on up and coming DJ’s, rather than big name superstars and will feature unannounced guests with Jasper James as permanent weekly resident. Friday nights will see a schedule of DJ’s take on all night sets or all night b2b sets to showcase their talent with sets already announced from the likes of Julio Bashmore, Gilles Peterson, TEED and DJ Sneak.
It’s testament to the confidence in Brixton as a nightlife destination and cultural hub that such an exciting club is opening up and bucking the nationwide trend of closures.
So to stop more clubs from closing and make sure Phonox is here to stay, I suggest that we all do our bit and go clubbing!
See you on the dance floor!
