Elephant & Castle has never been blessed with the best reputation, but its zone 1 location and terrific transport links are not to be sniffed at. I’ve worked in the area for the past 3 years and feel that there has never been a better time to become a fan, with a wealth of decent cafes and bars having sprung up. I’m always on the hunt for somewhere new to get lunch or that much needed after work tipple. Here are 5 of my favourites:
The Electric Elephant Café
Take a detour off Walworth Road and you will be rewarded by some delicious homemade food. The Electric Elephant is a small and quirky café located at the beginning of lliffe Yard. Serving reasonable priced breakfasts and sandwiches, homemade cakes, fresh juices and ‘damn fine coffee’, it is perfect for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea. From Thursday till Saturday the café stays open late and you can bring your own drinks while sampling their menu of the day.
186A Crampton Street, London SE17 3AE
An open aired venue complete with a stunning cocktail list, delicious street food and an exciting line up of DJs. Developed by the people behind Corsica Studios, The Paperworks is a favourite for end of week drinks in the sun. It’s not just music, food and drinks – there’s special events and cinema nights planned all through the summer. Arrive early to get a booth and when the sun goes down there’s blankets for you to wrap up in.

The Elephant Shack
Organic flatbreads wraps, rare breed steak burgers and craft beer from local London breweries make the Elephant Shack a perfect lunch time treat. Having started as a street food stall (Ladle & Skillet) this (delight) has taken up its first permanent residence in The Artworks. The food is served straight from the grill – fresh fast and delicious. The coffee is local too (from Nude Espresso) and I can personally recommend the dirty latte (an added shot of chai).

The Six Yard Box
For lovers of football and beer, the appropriately named Six Yard Box is well worth a visit. Located in one of The Artworks shipping containers, it screens most Terrestrial, BT Sports and Sky games (including the European matches). There’s local beer on offer and a BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) policy. It’s not just about watching the games though; the Six Yard Box regularly hosts events like Father Ted Bingo and FIFA PlayStation tournaments – there’s also table football!

Elephant and Castle has a thriving Latin American community and you can get a real taste of it at Chatica. All of the ingredients are sourced from Columbia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Peru for a distinctly authentic flavour. Start you day with a Columbian coffee and Envuelto (traditional wrap with cheese, corn and fried egg) then go back later for an Empanada.
