Kitchen Hijack at Job Centre, Deptford

Hungry folk of Deptford rejoice! This weekend marks the beginning of five weeks of kitchen hijacking at Job Centre – opening with Oh My Dog!, the hotdog extraordinaires.

Job Centre is perhaps one of the more original names I have heard for a local boozer; once the premises of an employment agency, it now serves pints to punters who I like to imagine have all uttered “I’m just heading down the Job Centre” to unsuspecting spouses before heading out of the door.

A job centre like no other...

A job centre like no other…

This Thursday saw the inauguration of the Kitchen Hijack: five weeks of kitchen takeovers that include the OMD! guys, traditional Kansas City BBQ Prairie Fire, meatballs specialists the Meat Heads, cheese toastie champs The Cheese Truck, and a number of other street food vendors. Each hijacker is allocated a three-day stint that rotates each Thursday, so once the week is out so is the vendor!

“We’re going to need a lot more dogs!”

Since it opened in June 2014, Job Centre has functioned without a kitchen, and it appeared on Thursday that they were very much giving the people what they wanted as the place was heaving with hungry customers keen to try out a Deptford Daschund or Chilli-Steakdog. Despite the dogs flying out of the kitchen at a rate of knots, the orders quickly piled up and there was a bit of a wait until your raffle ticket (literally) was called, but no matter as the music put on by South-East London DJ collective Pineapple Jam was banging and a round of drinks doesn’t break the bank.

The hotdogs were worth the wait when they arrived, piled high with pulled pork, cheese, gherkins, crispy onions, not to mention that damn fine German frank! Plentiful in portion and setting the bar high for future resident hijackers.

It tasted better than it looks here, honest!!

Definitely the coolest saloon bar in Deptford, now complete with a kitchen. For updates on the resident hijackers and the live music events that are accompanying them, check out

[…] [South London Blog]This pub used to be an actual job centre (surprise, surprise) but it’s now another South London boozer. Some say it’s “insulting” to the unemployed, some people say it’s the perfect example of gentrification, but others couldn’t care less just as long as they can get a beer. […]
